March 25, 2020 - Auditor - Absentee Voting & Planning for June 2 Primary Election

Cerro Gordo County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Adam Wedmore is encouraging those wishing to vote in the June 2 Primary Election to vote absentee by mail due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The June 2, 2020 Primary Election will occur and polling locations will be open for voting, however there may be changes such as fewer polling locations than normal or process changes to meet social distancing guidelines. The Auditor’s Office is working to determine what changes will need to be made and how those changes will be implemented.

To encourage absentee voting the Cerro Gordo County Auditor’s Office will mail absentee ballot request forms to all households of registered Cerro Gordo County voters. Voters can expect to receive their absentee request in late April but may complete and return an absentee request form now (Link is found below).  More information can be found on the Auditor Primary Election website. Important Dates

Thursday, April 23 - Absentee ballots will be mailed.  This is the earliest date allowed by law.

Monday, May 4 - In-person absentee voting at the Auditor’s Office will begin.

Friday, May 22 - 5PM - Absentee ballot requests must be received in the Auditor’s Office. Requests will be processed and a ballot with instructions will be mailed to the voter. Voters will be provided with a pre-paid return envelope to mail their completed ballot back.

March 20, 2020 - Treasurer - Changes in Late Fees for Property Tax Payments / Changes in Vehicle Registrations

Governor Reynolds issued a proclamation on 3/19/2020, that waives late penalty on property tax payments through April 16, 2020, to help give some assistance to Iowans dealing with the impact of COVID-19’s arrival in our state. Payments must be postmarked by April 16, 2020, paid online at Iowa Treasurer's Site by April 16, 2020, or dropped off in the Cerro Gordo County Treasurer drop box inside the Courthouse by April 16th to avoid a late penalty.

If your vehicle registration expired January 16, 2020, or later, it will be considered valid until the declared disaster has ended.

If you purchase or transfer a vehicle, you will not be required to obtain a title and registration within 30 days. This will remain in effect until the declared disaster is over. Carry your purchase documents/bill of sale in your car when driving until it is transferred into your name and plated. The bill of sale is also needed at the treasurer’s office to complete the transfer.

If you purchase a vehicle from a dealer, you will not be required to obtain license plates within 45 days. This will remain in effect until the declared disaster is over. Carry your purchase documents in your car when driving until it is transferred into your name and plated.

March 18, 2020 - Treasurer Contacts and Drop Box

Due to the high volume of traffic that we have in our office this month and in order to protect our customers and our staff we will be working inside our office behind closed doors and windows. Please call 641-421-3125 or email with questions pertaining to motor vehicles and/or real estate taxes.

At this time, we have suspended the issuance of passports.

We have a “drop box” located in the Treasurer’s hallway as well as a table with various forms. Forms of payment must be by check or credit card, no cash. Please secure all items with a paperclip or envelope as they are also available on the table.

Please write a contact telephone number on your check or with your credit card information. Your check will serve as a receipt. When provided, a credit card receipt can be emailed. Taxpayers can also verify payment within 48 hours at Iowa Treasurer's Site or Property Tax Search.

Items deposited in our “drop box” today should be processed within 48 hours.

Besides the Treasurer’s hallway drop box, customers are encouraged to pay taxes or renew vehicles online at Iowa Treasurer's Site or by using the United States Postal system.

Effective March 17, 2020 there is limited public access to the Cerro Gordo County Courthouse.

The public will only have access to the following:

  • State courts on 2nd floor
  • County Auditor on 1st floor
  • Drop box for County Treasurer on 1st floor

 All other offices will not be open to the public. County employees will be working and can assist the public through email, mail and by telephone. We appreciate the patience of the citizens of Cerro Gordo County as we take steps to protect the health and safety of the public and our employees.
